The Chronicles
November 2010
Salutations dear readers and fellow Laurentian neighbors,
This month, I would like to revisit the important topic of the organization of tasks on a computer in order to better execute them. Yes, I am aware of it, I often talk about this subject.
I mentioned before that there are three places where one must absolutely learn to organize. The first is located in the internal Filing System of the Computer: in Windows 7, it is titled "Libraries" which contains "My Documents", "My Music", "My Pictures" and "My Videos" (whereas in Windows XP and Vista, this same place exists under the name of "My Documents" with the other headings placed within it). The second place to organize is the Internet Browser (also known as "Favorites"). Finally the third is your E-Mail box.
Equally, I have already explained that within each of these locations, we create Files that contain sub-files that in turn contain sub-sub-files and so on (somewhat like a family tree or the organizational chart of an enterprise) in order to establish a logical organizational system within which it is easy to navigate to quickly find documents or photos or web links etc...
Once this organizational system is established, one must of course USE it. And for this use to be user-friendly, it is imperative that the configuration of said system be such that it corresponds, above all else, to the logical thinking personal to each individual.
Later on, each time one will want to add a document, a photo, a favorite, an e-mail etc... to the system, two questions must be asked and answered without fail: the first question is WHERE do I want to SAVE this item and the second is WHAT will I NAME it. If a user only asks and answers one of these questions (or none!), the computer will be unable during a future search to find the item being sought. Frustration is then the only outcome...
I conclude by saying that one must always remember NEVER to hit "Enter" without having asked and answered these TWO questions...
Take good care of yourselves,
