The Chronicles

November 2012

WOW, what a success last month’s definitions article was! So much so that I thought I’d continue in the same vein. Following are three more terms that are OFTEN misunderstood or confused:

Definition of 3G / 4G:

3G refers to the third generation of mobile telephony (that is, cellular) technology. The third generation, as the name suggests, follows two earlier generations. The first generation (1G) began in the early 80's, the second generation (2G) emerged in the 90's. Approximately 10 years later came the 3G network. To get from 2G to 3G, mobile operators made "evolutionary" upgrades to existing networks while simultaneously planning their "revolutionary" new mobile broadband networks. Amazing new services became available such as: * Enhanced audio and video streaming, * Video-conferencing support, * Web browsing at higher speeds and finally * IPTV (TV through the Internet) support. We are now hearing about 4G (as well as LTE from Rogers) which basically increases down/upload speeds though nobody really knows yet all the “magic” this new generation will create!

Definition of Wi-Fi:

Wi-Fi (or WiFi or Wifi) is the standard way computers connect to wireless networks over radio frequency (RF) technology. Nearly all computers now have built-in Wi-Fi cards which allow users to search for and connect to an access point (also known as a hotspot) and join a wireless network. Mobile devices (eg. Tablets, Smart Phones), video game systems (eg. Wii, Xbox 360, Playstation) and other standalone devices (eg. Printers) also include Wi-Fi capability, enabling them to connect to wireless networks as well. The Wi-Fi connection only exists between the device and the router. Most routers are connected to a DSL or cable modem (offered by eg. Sympatico, Cogeco, Videotron...), which provides Internet access to all connected devices. Wi-Fi provides service in private homes, businesses as well as in public spaces. Wi-Fi hotspots are set up either free-of-charge (eg. Airports, Libraries, Hotels) or at a minimum charge (eg. Cafes, Hotels). The most important point to understand is, if one connects to a public Wi-Fi (acronym of Wireless Fidelity) without being asked a password, NEVER carry out monetary transactions or peruse highly confidential information on the Internet.

Definition of Bluetooth:

Bluetooth is a specification for the use of low-power radio communications to wirelessly link phones, computers and other network devices over short distances (approx. 10 meters). Although it sounds similar, Bluetooth technology is not a suitable Wi-Fi replacement as Bluetooth networking is much slower, a bit more limited in range and supports many fewer devices. Instead of creating a local-area network (LAN) or a wide-area network (WAN), Bluetooth creates a personal-area network (PAN) just for you. Cell phones, for example, can be paired with wireless Bluetooth headsets. When used in tandem with a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone and successfully paired, you can leave your cell phone in your pocket and perform most of your mobile phone’s functions using your in-ear Bluetooth headset. In addition to being paired with cell phones, short-range Bluetooth technology is also compatible with personal computers, laptops, printers, GPS receivers, digital cameras, telephones, video game consoles and more for various practical functions. The name Bluetooth is borrowed from Harald Bluetooth, a Danish king who lived more than 1,000 years ago and who united feuding Danish tribes into a single kingdom. The implication is that Bluetooth does the same with communications protocols, uniting them into one universal standard.

Hope that helps you all understand a little better what’s what!

Take good care of yourselves,
