The Chronicles
This month, I have quite an amazing story to tell you. It is a story like many others, a story that takes place every few seconds somewhere in the world, but this particular one however has a somewhat of a surprising ending ..
"There once was a friend who became a client, or is it a client who became a friend? No matter! So this lovely lady goes out food shopping in Sainte-Agathe. We are Thursday, the 16th of October, beginning of the evening. It is grey and raining, and it is really hot! Everything is going along as normal when suddenly... BAM! her handbag disappears!!! Panic sets in! Everything is in there: wallet and money, identification and credit cards, Smartphone, etc ... etc ... Luckily, someone noticed a grey car speeding away...
France comes home at once to contact me straight away. An attentive student, she remembers I had once told her when setting-up her Smartphone that I had activated the possibility of localizing it if ever it was lost or stolen. But there's a snag, how can she communicate with me? Her cell phone is her only phone since she cancelled her landline service. There again, luck is on her side ... She also remembers that during another lesson back when, I had also taught her how to use Google Talk (now Google+ Hangouts) that allows anyone to call for free anywhere in Canada and the US using one's computer and via one's Gmail account.
Dring dring ... Yes ... AAARRRRR, someone stole my handbag!!! OK France... open Team Viewer and give me your ID and your Password. (Note: Team Viewer is a program that allows a third party to enter a computer at a distance in order to provide help). Once we were connected, we consulted the Android devices Manager and asked for the localization of her Smartphone. AND MIRACLE! there it is, on X street in Sainte-Agathe...
France gets hold of the police. They all go to the address indicated on Google Maps and EUREKA! France gets back her handbag and all of its content."
I told you this story ended in a way most surprising, no? Truth be told, it is no longer surprising when one knows how to use the new technologies. Not only is it possible to locate smart phones and tablets (Android and iPhone/iPad), but it is also possible to make devices ring (if lost inside the house), to lock them (if left where one knows they will recuperate them), or even delete all personal data (in case of theft with no possibility of recuperation). All this can be done by remote and does not affect in any way your data, neither on the cloud nor on other computer devices! The trick is to activate the service BEFORE any such event. This is what I am encouraging you to do after reading this article! If you do not know how, by all means get in touch with me, it will be a great pleasure to meet you in person.
Take good care of yourself!
